Growing up in Southern Oregon I have access to some of the world’s best hardwoods and burl woods. I like to incorporate the natural features the raw tree has to offer in my pieces. A natural edge opening, or the movement and warping of green wood, or a knot or a branch incorporated in the shape all add character to the final piece. What some woodworkers consider a flaw in the wood, I use to my advantage. As I work each piece, the material speaks back to me telling me which direction I should take it. Letting the piece speak as an individual. I source out the best material I can find and ask myself with each piece, how can I best represent this beautiful piece of wood with the skills I have?

I was born in the Ore Mountain region of the (former) East Germany. The region is famous for its hand-carved wooden smoking men, light angels, and pyramids. Steeped in this heritage of fine woodwork and high-quality German craftsmanship, I grew up whittling, carving, and doing carpentry.

In 1989 I moved to the States where I got a degree in Construction Management at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and worked for years in the Bay Area. After moving to Ashland in 2001, I decided to focus full time on fine woodwork, and in particular, furniture making. For many years I continued my woodworking studies at James Krenov’s woodworking program at the College of the Redwoods, now The Krenov School, in Fort Bragg, California.

I work out of my shop in Ashland, Oregon where I enjoy helping my clients realize their furniture dreams by creating lasting heirloom pieces sourced mainly from local and sustainable sources.

I have been working with wood for most of my life. We are comfortable with each other, have a close relationship and I value the connection immensely. I am curious about what is inside, how it works. I am always looking for the gifts it has to offer. At times I am awed by its beauty and the story of its history, the tracks that the passing of time has left. I am driven to expose this beauty, to make it shine. At other times I am more fascinated with its inner structure, its more subtle form, and spirit.

To be working this closely with nature is a blessing, but also often overwhelming. It is a struggle. At times I find myself needing to put my foot down, to control the outcome of my work, only to find that I trampled something beautiful. At other times I feel overwhelmed, scared: what is needed of me here, how can I match the beauty of this living thing? How am I to know when to be loud and when to be quiet? Maybe this stuff just matches my personality, something to wrestle with, something that stirs my imagination, something to control. That nature versus manmade thing, that struggle, that tension, that conflict.

My work is about my relationship with nature, my desire to connect with it on a deep level. Trying to get under its skin and be part of it. Searching, finding something sacred, adding my touch, wrestling with it. Showing the beauty of it under a different light: exposing, transforming. I make things out of a deep urge to create and out of a driving curiosity.

About: My interest in woodworking started in the late 1990s as a hobby as it provided a nice break from my job as a software engineer. I enrolled in various woodworking classes. In particular, two semesters at a community college studying Japanese joinery techniques greatly enhanced my interest in hand tools. Eventually, I found myself enrolled in the two-year fine woodworking program at North Bennet Street School in Boston. After that, my wife and I ended up in Ashland Oregon in 2010 where, to my delight, I discovered that Ashland was the home of the wonderful Siskiyou Woodcraft Guild!

Description of piece: This table can be described as a modern interpretation of a classic shaker drop leaf table. I built this table using sipo (or sometimes called utile) mahogany for the top and wenge for the legs, both imported from Africa. The table is 28” high. With the leaves up, the top is 32” in diameter. With both leaves down, the top becomes 16 inches deep.

Cost and shipping: This table is $2500 for local delivery. Note “local” is somewhat vague and we can determine what that means as necessary. For shipping, I will need to build a wooden crate and ship as freight. This cost will be added once it is figured out. PayPal, cash, or check accepted. Note that the check will need to clear before delivery.

Visiting the shop: Furniture really needs to be seen up close and touched. We can plan for you to visit my shop and see the furniture. However, with Covid-19 concerns, we will need to do so in a way that is safe. We can discuss how this can be done as necessary.

I make a wide variety of handcrafted wood items in my shop in Ashland from both native and exotic hardwoods. I specialize in smaller unique items that can be used in the home for accent and focal points.

One featured work here is hardwood chests with soft close lids. Black walnut is pictured, but these can also be made in cherry or oak as well as other woods to suit the client. Frequently used as gifts for storing toys or other items for a children’s room, they can also be adapted to have cedar lining and become a blanket storage chest.

Other featured works include detailed, handcrafted serving trays featuring complementary and contrasting hardwood highlights. Additionally, there is a Cherry wall hanging curio cabinet that features unique floral applique, in this case, an iris and leaves. Various unique end grain cutting and straight boards are available. I take orders to make custom items. I am primarily a maker of custom one-of-a-kind boxes. Many of the boxes are veneered with book-matched burl. Elm and Walnut are two woods that I often employ. Lined boxes are done in either dyed goat or pigskin suede. All the hardware used is solid brass.
